The Maithili Shaikh live in India’s Bihar state, along with the Kunjra and Mahur peoples. While the Kunjra live in the far eastern part of the state, the Maithili live in the north, not far from the India/Nepal border.
Bihar lies in east India, between West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, and though it is the 12th largest state in India in terms of geographical size, Bihar ranks as the 3rd most populous state in the nation.
Bihar is one of the toughest, poorest, and least developed places on earth and is characterized by extreme spiritual darkness. It has a population of roughly 94 million people and hardly any long-term workers. The state is so difficult and so unaffected by long-term efforts that it has come to be known as, "the graveyard of missions."
Today, Hinduism is the majority religion in Bihar; however, Muslims make up nearly 17% of the population and are the largest religious minority. Most Muslims in Bihar are Sunni and practice a non-extreme form of Islam.
