The Bengali Shaikh live in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, which borders the country of Bangladesh and whose capital city is Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). William Carey first attempted to reach this group in 1793 and for 200 years long-term effort has rendered little fruit.
Like the rest of India’s states, the government of West Bengal is democratic. For the last 30 years, the state has been ruled by a communist party known as the Left Front Alliance. That leadership makes West Bengal the longest-running democratically-elected communist government in the world.
West Bengal is primarily an agricultural state, with rice and high-quality tea being the major crops. In addition, Kolkata is becoming a growing industrial center for information technology and boasts a fast-expanding economy. The rest of the state is enjoying a developing economy as well, as West Bengal is ranked as having the third largest state economy of India.
