Like the Kho, the Kolai are found in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province. While the Kho live in the northwestern part of the province, the Kolai are found further to the southeast.
Northern Pakistan, bordered by China, Afghanistan, and India, is said to contain the most breathtaking sights in the country. It is there, nestled between five of the world’s highest mountain peaks, that Pakistan’s northern tribes can be found, including the Kolai.
The northern tribes are isolated by mountain ranges and political borders, and most work as farmers and shepherds. Many suffer various health problems due to poor water quality and poor nutrition. Drinkable water, sewage disposal, and drainage facilities are available to less than 8% of the population.
Today, the vast majority of the Kolai are Sunni Muslim, and some also practice shamanism. They believe that there is an unseen world of gods, demons, fairies, and ancestral spirits, and thus they depend on shamans to cure the sick, communicate with the gods, and influence events in the human realm.
