The Jhojha live in north central India, close to the capital of Delhi and near the Bhatiara and Bhatia peoples. This people group is mostly concentrated in the northwestern region of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
For almost 600 years, much of India was ruled by Muslim dynasties, many of them based in the area where the Jhojha people now live. Uttar Pradesh was also the center of the Mughal Empire, one of the most well-known Muslim dynasties in India’s history ruling the nation for over 200 years.
Islam is now the largest minority religion in India, with a large percentage of Muslims concentrated in the northern part of the country. It is estimated that Muslims comprise 13 to 20 percent of India’s total population - more than 138 million people - and there are more Muslims in Uttar Pradesh than in any other state in India.
