Does Frontiers seek to convert Muslims to Christianity?
We believe everyone needs Jesus – not just Muslims. Frontiers was founded in 1982 because very few agencies and churches were choosing to send teams to Muslim people groups. It seemed right to focus all our attention on Muslims because they had been so neglected – for most people, Muslims had never before seemed receptive to the Bible’s message.
Almost thirty years later, hundreds of thousands across the Muslim world are calling Jesus their Lord – by many estimates, there are now more Muslims trusting in Jesus’ saving power than there were during Islam’s 13 previous centuries - combined. We believe part of the reason for so much new birth may be that Christians worldwide, from many agencies, are now sharing Jesus’ words in Muslim countries, despite government restrictions. Frontiers strives to fulfill this calling with love for people and respect for their culture. To this day, hundreds of millions have no one to tell them what Jesus accomplished on their behalf, so there is much to be done.
More than 200 Frontiers teams are spread across approximately 45 Muslim countries, as well as nations where there are large populations of Muslim minorities and little witness. Frontiers does not send teams to Western Europe or North America because churches in these regions have the freedom to share Jesus with Muslims in their midst. We are currently looking for new teams to go and serve in places where the love of Jesus has not yet reached. Check out The Unengaged for more information.
Within some Muslim countries, there are individuals and groups that are hostile toward Americans. Despite this risk, in nearly three decades not even one Frontiers worker has been killed by a Muslim as a result of their work sharing Jesus’ good news. This may happen in the future (Revelation 6:9). However, if you would like to learn about Frontiers’ biggest source of fear, you can read about the most famous worker to ever serve in an Iraqi city and the deadly situations leading up to his decision -- Jonah!
Frontiers requires no particular degree. If a church has prepared one of its families or singles to handle God’s Word accurately and commissions them, Frontiers will work to help them gather or join a team reaching Muslims. Frontiers believes that young and old individuals without prior experience overseas can establish communities of followers of Jesus in the Muslim world - provided they are eager for coaching. That said, governments in most Muslim countries demand that expatriates work or study while living within their borders, so it’s wise to either have marketable skills or be active at a university while you’re there. We desire Muslims to enter into a saving relationship with the God who created them and sent messengers to tell them about His offer of peace through the gift of His Son. We want to introduce them to a Person (Jesus) with the power to change their hearts. We believe that we do not have the power of conversion, just as the Qur’an states (S. 2:256), but rather it is by the conviction of God’s Spirit to bring people to repentance in Jesus’ name.
